Supervisor training and student employment updates

Virtual Information Session for Supervisors and Additional Guidance on Return to Work
At 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 5, the HR team will host an online information session for supervisors to provide additional guidance and answer questions on how to best manage and support our employees during this time. To register for the session, please email Karen Smith at ksmith12@niu.edu.

As supervisors, we all need to model and strive to uphold the expectations outlined in Protecting the Pack.

We also need to continue to lead with compassion, flexibility and equity and provide our employees with access to vacation and leave time, as well as options for balancing work and caregiving responsibilities. Addressing the challenges facing employees who are caregivers is part of our core value of equity and inclusion and is an important part of retaining our talented workforce. As managers, we need to promote a culture of respect and be proactive in communicating the availability of specific benefits or policies designed to support employees who are particularly vulnerable.

Additionally, as a follow up to the travel and quarantine guidance issued by Provost Ingram on July 6 and the section addressing travel in Protecting the Pack, frequently asked questions have been added to the website to address questions related to employee time-off requests and guidelines for when they return to work.

Hiring Student Employees
I am happy to report that teams in Human Resource Services and Career Services have been working collaboratively on a central, online location for student employment opportunities. Beginning August 1, all student worker jobs will be posted in a new central location on Huskies Get Hired, the Career Services’ online portal for student employment. This decision makes the process of identifying campus employment opportunities more convenient for both students and hiring managers and eliminates an often-disparate practice that required students to visit numerous offices in person to inquire about job openings. Campus employers should start adding their vacant student positions to Huskies Get Hired using the instructions available on the Career Services website.

Thank you for your service to the NIU community.

Sincerely,

Vernese Edghill-Walden
Interim Chief Human Resource Officer
