Important Updates from Human Resource Services

Illinois Minimum Wage Update
The minimum wage in Illinois will increase again, January 1, 2021, as authorized by Public Act 101-1. This increase will result in a state minimum wage of $15.00 by January 1, 2025. The intermediate increases are:

Date of Increase New Minimum Wage
January 1, 2021 $11.00
January 1, 2022 $12.00
January 1, 2023 $13.00
January 1, 2024 $14.00
January 1, 2025 $15.00

 

On January 1, 2021, Human Resource Services (HRS) will run a program that will convert the pay rates for any hourly employees who are paid less than $11.00 an hour to the new minimum of $11.00.  Accordingly, you will need to adjust resource allocations in cost centers to support the new minimum wage. No additional resources will be provided to fund the increases. If your department has adjustments that need to be made outside of this process for students and extra-help employees, we would appreciate receiving the paperwork by December 21, 2020.

Please note that this change happens in the middle of our fiscal year, so you will need to account for future changes in the budgeting process that may occur in the spring at NIU.

Additionally, the ranges for both extra help and students have been updated to reflect the new minimum wages. We appreciate your assistance in implementing the January 1 minimum wage increase.

I-9 & New Hire Paperwork Completion
On October 1, 2020, Human Resources Services launched the electronic I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification process. As a result, paper copies are no longer being accepted. Additionally, HRS would like to remind hiring departments that new hires should complete Section 1 of the I-9 by the employee’s first day of work and that new hires should not begin working until all the hiring paperwork has been processed by HRS.

Please keep in mind, that while onboarding (including the completion of the I-9) and orientation are now online, they do take time for individuals to complete. To best continue to serve our new employees and departments in a timely manner, all necessary hiring paperwork should be received by HRS at least five business days before the employee’s anticipated start date.

Spring Graduate Assistantships
Finally, a quick reminder that graduate assistants can be hired to work remotely for spring semester if the work they are doing can be performed remotely and they have a U.S. bank account. Please ensure that all hiring forms have been submitted and processed prior to the student starting work.
