Paperless I-9 verification process launches Oct. 1, 2020

The new process for Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification paperwork begins today, Oct. 1, 2020. I-9 verifications are now automated as part of the new employee onboarding process, with the employee providing the necessary information electronically. Paper forms are no longer accepted by Human Resource Services.

New hires  are required to complete Section 1 of Form I-9 on or before their first day of employment. Section 2 of Form I-9 must be completed, with a Human Resources representative, no later than the new hires’ first three (3) days of work. If Form I-9 is not completed before the new hire’s third day of work, they will not be able to continue working at the university until the form has been completed.

NIU is also now recognized as an E-Verify employer. E-Verify is an Internet-based system that compares information entered by an employer from an employee’s Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, to records available to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to confirm employment eligibility.
