Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act

This was sent via email to all employees on January 9, 2024

Key points:

  • New Illinois law requiring additional paid leave options for certain employment groups.
  • The Illinois Department of Labor is still finalizing rules for administering new leave benefits.
  • It became effective Jan. 1, 2024; however, it will be implemented at NIU on March 31, 2024.  This delay is due to the state having not finalized the administrative rules.
  • NIU policy and additional details are forthcoming.

Human Resource Services would like to notify you about the Illinois Paid Leave for All Workers Act (P.A. 102-1143) that became effective on Jan. 1, 2024.

This new state law allows employees to earn up to five (5) days of leave each year to maintain their health and well-being, care for their families, or use for any other reason. Not all employment groups are eligible, and certain exceptions apply to employers providing their workers with paid leave.

While the public act became law on Jan. 1, the final provisions are still in the rule-making process at the state level and are expected to be completed by mid-February.  Under the provisions of the law, eligible employees will be able to begin using these additional earned paid leave benefits beginning Mar. 31, 2024.

Once the state finalizes the rule-making process, NIU will develop a policy on this leave benefit to detail more information for all eligible employees and how to utilize this new benefit. The policy will be shared through NIU’s Policy Library proposal process and is expected to be available by late February.
