Fall Hiring Update for UPI Instructors

(This email was sent to Associate Dean, Department Heads and Business Managers of Academic Affairs. Please forward to anyone in your unit that processes the hiring of UPI instructors.)

As you are aware, at its June 4, 2026, meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Northern Illinois University and Local 4100 of the University Professionals of Illinois (UPI).

As we prepare and deliver training related to the new CBA, we ask that you wait until after this training to issue any fall offer letters/reappointment letters to UPI instructors. Waiting will allow us to ensure that the offers are consistent with the CBA.

Human Resource Services, in partnership with Academic Affairs Labor Relations, will hold a brief training session on July 7 at 10 a.m. to provide you with important updates as it relates to fall hiring. You will be sent a calendar invitation for this training later this morning. Please forward to anyone in your unit that processes the hiring of UPI instructors. We will also record the session for anyone that is unable to attend.

Academic Affairs Labor Relations is working with each of the academic colleges to hold detailed training of the new contract at later dates. More information on those sessions will be provided closer to the start of the fall semester.
